What is the Internet of Things (IOT)?

There is no single definition of IOT and everyone you ask will have a different opinion. The best way to understand something is to ask questions. So I decided to interview a handful of IOT companies and ask them what they thought about the subject. Moreover, I wanted to go even deeper and ask these companies their views on the industry, so as to get the whole picture.  After all, these Companies are the ones defining the Internet of Things.

Sigsense

Sigsense Technologies Matt Burtch, CEO, http://www.sigsensetech.com/

Q: What is your definition of IOT (1-2 sentences)?

A: “Connectivity and intelligence enabled hardware to add value to users.”

Q: What sub-category of IOT is your Company in?

A: “Industrial IOT:  Equipment maintenance and service.”

Q: What problem does your Company solve, as related to IOT?

A: “Equipment Service and Maintenance is stuck on a break-and-fix model. Driving up expenses for both equipment operators and service organizations. We help companies get remote insights into equipment utilization and upcoming needs and provide predictive maintenance through IoT.”

Q: 5 years from now, how will IOT change?

A: “Intelligence and delivering value is going to be the focus going forward. Up until now the focus of IoT has been primarily providing remote capabilities, in the next 5 years intelligence will be the focus more than connectivity.”

Q: What makes you most excited about IOT?

A: “Cloud, AI and big data is unlocking a lot of capabilities. With the control and data collection capabilities which come with IoT I think the possibilities for integration solutions and new ways to solve old problems is really exciting.”

Q: Tell us an interesting IOT fact:

A: “60 percent of consumers say they would be willing to share data from their cars with the manufacturer if they were gifted one free maintenance session in exchange.”

EVREr

EVRYTHNGNiall Murphy, Founder & CE, https://evrythng.com/

Q: What is your definition of IOT (1-2 sentences)?

A: “The Internet of Things is physical things becoming part of the digital ecosystem, sharing data, being driven by data, participating in the application ecosystem as digital entities.”

Q: What sub-category of IOT is your Company in?

A: “Platform-as-a-Service to Manage the Digital Identity of Products and Connect them to the Web.”

Q: What problem does your Company solve, as related to IOT?

A: “How product manufacturers operate their physical products as digital assets, organizing and programming the data from and about their products to drive applications, services and the products themselves.”

Q: 5 years from now, how will IOT change?

A: “The focus of value creation will not be on how to get things connected to the internet, but how things connect with each other dynamically and automatically.”

Q: What makes you most excited about IOT?

A: “The ability to unlock huge amounts of insight and efficiency with real-time data from products, and how these products will participate in the digital ecosystem of the Web as digital entities.”

Q: Tell us an interesting IOT fact:

A: “There are 3.5 trillion consumer products made and sold every year in the world. Almost all of these will be digitally enabled 10 years from now.”

SeseSensoria Inc.Paolo Sciarra, Marketing, http://www.sensoriafitness.com/

Q: What is your definition of IOT (1-2 sentences)?

A: “Any new or existing internet connected product or device that was traditionally not connected to the internet directly or through another device.”

Q: What sub-category of IOT is your Company in?

A: “Smart garments, apparel and footwear.”

Q: What problem does your Company solve, as related to IOT?

A: “We enable people to get biometric data from their body and we convert that into actionable information in real-time and ex post.”

Q: 5 years from now, how will IOT change?

A: “Most devices will be IoT or IoE (internet of everyone) devices by then.”

Q: What makes you most excited about IOT?

A: “Creating business and consumer experiences that are quantified.”

Q: Tell us an interesting IOT fact:

WirelessThe Wireless RegistryPatrick Parodi, CEO, http://www.wirelessregistry.com/

Q: What is your definition of IOT (1-2 sentences)?

A: “The Internet of Things is best described as the Internet of Wireless Things. “

Q: What sub-category of IOT is your Company in?

A: “Identity and intelligence services.”

Q: What problem does your Company solve, as related to IOT?

A: “As they move through the physical world, IoT devices constantly discover each other by announcing “Hello, I am here,” to other devices around them.  The Wireless Registry associates identities and meaning to these detectable signals (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, and more).  Our patented infrastructure thereby builds the dynamic “Signal Graph” of device interactions, enabling IoT identity and intelligence services that give wireless devices, mobile apps, and their users the ability to engage with each other in new, privacy-sensitive ways.”

Q: 5 years from now, how will IOT change?

A: “As the IoT grows, infrastructure like The Wireless Registry’s will ensure that IoT devices can interact in a scalable way, i.e., across huge numbers, on the basis of detection rather than connection, and with little need for human intervention.”

Q: What makes you most excited about IOT?

A: “The IoT will provide opportunities to glean new types of data and analytics that have the potential to impact individuals and society in truly positive ways.”

Q: Tell us an interesting IOT fact:

A: “We are now witnessing the very early stages of the IoT, which will eventually have an impact comparable in scope and magnitude to that of the emergence of the Internet.”

So there you have it. Next time someone at your dinner table asks you to explain what the “Internet of Things” actually means, here is your cheat card. As you can see IOT encompasses many verticals and is not specific to any one category. The beauty of IOT is that it will permeate most, if not all, industries that currently exist today. If you think the “Internet” was big, IOT is predicted to be even bigger than the internet! Looking forward to this journey and what becomes of it.
